COURSES

A summary of all the courses I took at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in pursuit of my MA in International Education Management.

Principles and Practices of International Ed

This is the basic course that gives students an overview of the entire international education field and the many job possibilities and responsibilities. 


 

Comparative International Education

This course offers an introduction to the breadth of educational systems and structures around the world, and the cultural, historical, philosophical, and economic forces that shape these systems. 


 

Managing People and Resources

In this course, I learned managing techniques that could translate across cultures and people styles.  There was also an emphasis on budgeting practice. 


 

​Marketing and Recruiting

Through this course, I learned the ins and outs of what draws students to certain programs and how an organization can improve marketing and recruiting tactics. We were also able to work with a learning partner to create a marketing plan for them. 


 

International Education Program Design

This course allowed me to apply conceptual frameworks for program design, with an emphasis on utilizing logic models to guide program planning. I learned how to build and test program design ideas, identify models of good practice, and link to assessments for quality assurance.


 

International Education Program Assessment 

With this course, I examined approaches to assessment, drafted and evaluated learning outcomes, and wrote assessment plans. This course also allowed us to assess a project in partnership with an international education organization.


 

Social Issues, Justice, and Change in IE 

In this course, I explored the relationships between international education and power, privilege, equity, diversity, and inclusion. I also explored notions of oppression and transformation and the conditions which facilitate and block social justice and change at various levels.


 

International Student and Scholar Services

Through this course I learned more about the role of international student and school services offices in U.S. higher education, exploring the types of services offered, visa regulations, best practices, and academic and social integration of international students among many other topics. 


 

Higher Education Administration

This course examines the topic through the lenses of campus business offices, student services, and academic programs, systems theory will be used to examine the impact of university culture upon higher education administration practices


 

Education and Development

This course introduced me to perspectives and debates relevant to understanding the relationship between education and development (economic, political, social, etc.) and the politics of education development, with a focus on less developed countries.


 

Services for Student Development

This course used student development theories related to intrapersonal, psychosocial, and cognitive growth as frameworks for examining professional practice in the U.S. higher education context with an emphasis on theories related to identity and interpersonal development.


 

Internationalization K-12

In this course, I explored approaches to developing the global competence of youth in formal and non-formal education. Topics included curricular and co-curricular program development, international travel and study, the use of technology, and policy initiatives.


 

Introduction to Intercultural Competency

Through this course, I gained an overview of theories and approaches related to communicating within and across different cultural communities. The course addresses the complexity behind the concept of “culture” and guides students through greater awareness of their own culture(s).


 

Communicating in Multicultural Settings

This course examined the social, cultural, and linguistic factors that play a role in how intercultural communication is accomplished in multilingual/ multicultural settings. I gained the knowledge and tools needed for effective participation in multilingual/multicultural communication.
